(Update on RixTalk Audible Ruler)
Last week, the audible ruler was given a brief test by one of our students at UEL who has a sight impairment. This is the first time it has really been tested out, so was a great opportunity for some feedback on what we’ve created so far.

Without going into too many details here (I’ll keep those for a later post), the audible component was well received and found to be very helpful, though a volume control would be beneficial. What surprised me the most was that she liked the fact that the pencil was wired to the base unit. I had originally wanted to make it wireless, but she said that the wire helped her to locate the pencil if she dropped it.
This is a good example of inclusive research with people who have lived experience are at the centre of the process and inform the direction in ways that are often not possible to predict otherwise.
Coming soon: the first test with RixBot – Programming a robotic buggy for people with sight impairments.
