It’s the ISD1820 chip on this ‘voice record module’: http://www.elecfreaks.com/wiki/index.php?title=Voice_Record_Module_-_ISD1820
The microphone was removed and replaced with a similar one on short wires, and the speaker is driven by a small amplifier: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11044
Nic has plans to make a microphone preamp circuit out of an opamp, but that’s not been done yet.
